Wolf Creek Ski Area grew from improvised skiing on Wolf Creek Pass in the nineteen thirties, after a new highway opened the route and local skiers built early rope tows and patrols near the summit. Early figures including Kelly Boyce and Charles Elliott helped establish the sport there, and some later served in the 10th Mountain Division during World War Two. The resort moved to its present site in 1956 through a community-led effort organized by Ronald Major and W. Edward Sharp, then endured years of financial strain before expanding with new lifts and ownership changes. Known for Colorado’s heaviest average snowfall, it remains important both for its grassroots skiing history and for continuing debates over nearby development and conservation.
