Hog Island Shoal Light stands off Hog Island, Rhode Island, at the entrance to Mount Hope Bay, about 600 feet southeast of the island. Built in 1901 as a compact sparkplug lighthouse designed to rest directly on a shoal, it rises from a circular concrete foundation set in about 10 feet of water and extending roughly 6 feet above the waterline. It replaced a lightship and became the last light station formally established in Rhode Island, marking the close of an era in the state’s lighthouse development. Automated in 1964, it later gained recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 and was sold to a private buyer in 2006.
