Pocahontas State Park, a park of 7604 acres originally known as the Swift Creek Recreational Area, was purchased in 1934 and subsequently developed by the federal government with the understanding that the State would eventually accept and maintain the property as part of its Park System. On June 6, 1946, the Virginia Conservation Commission dedicated the park and named it for the Indian princess Pocahontas.
