Sugarbush Hill, across the valley, is one of the highest points in the northern highland geological province. Covering about 15,000 square miles in northern Wisconsin, this province rests on crystalline rock from an ancient mountain range comparable to the Rockies, whose peaks were worn down by glacial and other geological processes over almost infinite time. Its land is especially suited to growing timber, so extensive forests of hardwoods and conifers cover most of the area. Within this forest region lies one of the greatest concentrations of lakes in the world, similar to Finland, and the cool climate and myriad of lakes make it an ideal vacationland.
