The roots of this church trace to the efforts of Reverend Elijah Hitch, a local preacher of the Methodist Episcopal denomination, who was invited by area residents to hold services in their homes during the spring of 1842. Later meetings were conducted at the local school, and a successful camp meeting was held nearby in July of that year. Desiring a more permanent place of worship, the new congregation purchased a half-acre of ground at this location on September 27, 1842. A church was then constructed and named for one of the oldest Methodist churches in this country, St. George's in Philadelphia. The first building was used until 1888, when the present church was constructed. A Community Hall was added in 1924, and the Sunday School addition, which connects the two buildings, was completed in the 1950s.
