Since its heroic salvation in 1864, Edinburg Mill has been a source of pride for its contributions to the national story and the local economy. As the mill and its museum grew in historic and cultural significance into the 21st century, chronic erosion along Stony Creek worsened with each meteorological event and the ground beneath the site literally disappeared despite desperate attempts at quick fixes. Mike Hollar recognized the need for immediate action and promoted a rain garden that worked with nature to protect both the present and the past. With assistance from the Virginia Game and Inland Fisheries, the Friends of the North Fork, the Center for Watershed Protection, the Town of Edinburg, and Mother Nature, the project began in 2016. Although Mike did not live to see his environmental vision completed, his dedication and humble persistence now grow along the bank of Stony Creek.
