The Star of the Republic Museum stands at Washington on the Brazos, where delegates declared Texas independence from Mexico on March 2, 1836. Created to preserve and interpret the culture and history of the Republic of Texas from 1836 to 1846, it was established by the Texas Legislature in 1969 and opened in 1970. Administered by Blinn College, it presents early Texas history, the independence struggle, and the social and multicultural life of the 1830s and 1840s through more than 1,000 objects, including the oldest known Texas flag and artifacts linked to declaration signers. It also serves the wider historic site through tours, events, and descendant registry work.
