The arrival of the Erie Railroad in Wellsville in 1851 contributed greatly to the town's growth, bringing many new families and businesses to the area and causing the population to almost double in size. The old depot stood on Loder Street at Central Place, and a newer depot was erected near Jefferson Street in 1911.
