Set on a bluff above the Wisconsin River in Wausau, Wisconsin, this 1958 Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian house was built for Duey and Julia Wright, who were not related to the architect. Part of Wright’s late domestic work, it uses an efficient largely single-story plan with open living spaces, concrete block construction, and a size notably larger than many Usonian houses. Music strongly shaped its design: the plan resembles a musical note, clerestory perforated boards reflect the rhythm of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, and the living room’s built-in bench could seat about 30 people for concerts. Completed after Wright’s death, it was finished by John H. “Jack” Howe and John deKoven Hill.
