The Sloan Site in Arkansas, near Crowley’s Ridge, is one of the oldest documented cemeteries in the New World and a major Paleo-Indian archaeological site. Set on a late Ice Age sand dune between Crowley’s Ridge and the Ozarks, it was first documented in June 1968 by Arkansas State University student Mary Ann Sloan. In 1974, after reports that artifacts were being scavenged and sold, Dr. Dan Morse excavated part of the site. A 12 by 12 meter area revealed Dalton-period graves with bone fragments and artifacts dating between 12,480 and 11,300 years ago, underscoring the site’s exceptional age and importance.
