Fresno Flats served as a farming and supply center for the mining and lumber industries. Its local blacksmith was known throughout the area as the only one able to fabricate and repair large wheels. The oldest still-operating post office in Madera County opened there in 1874. After Mrs. C Meyers, tired of hearing Fresno Flats associated with Charlie Meyers robbing the Yosemite Stage, circulated a petition among newcomers, the community's name was changed to Oakhurst in 1912 without the knowledge or consent of the pioneer families. Disgruntled oldtimers nicknamed it "Oh, Cursed!" The Old Missouri Saloon stands to the east and the blacksmith barn to the west.
