In a wooded area of West Hartford, Connecticut, this archaeological site preserves the remains of a brief Continental Army encampment from October 1778. As General George Washington reacted to fears that British forces leaving New York City might raid Connecticut, two brigades under Enoch Poor and Ebenezer Learned were sent into the Hartford area, and soldiers occupied this spot from October 15 to 21. Units present included Capt. Isaac Frye's company of the 3rd New Hampshire Battalion under Col. Alexander Scammell. Today, little remains above ground except stone-lined fireplace ruins. The site later served as a military hospital and is significant for its surviving evidence of that wartime episode.
