A small nearby cemetery contains the graves of Choctaw chief Samuel Garland, who served from 1862 to 1864, and family members including his mother-in-law, Sophie Pitchlynn. Peter Pitchlynn, son of Sophie and John Pitchlynn, served as chief from 1864 to 1866. Garland migrated from Mississippi during Choctaw removal in the 1830s and opened and operated a large plantation in the vicinity with black slave labor. The cemetery is the only remaining evidence of Garland occupation. Sophie Pitchlynn's headstone bears a birthdate of December 27, 1773, believed to be the earliest in Oklahoma.
