Strawbery Banke preserves Portsmouth’s earliest surviving neighborhood and the oldest neighborhood in New Hampshire settled by Europeans. Begun in 1630 along the Piscataqua River and named for wild strawberries, it grew from an early English settlement into a prosperous waterfront mercantile community later known as Puddle Dock. More than 37 restored buildings from the 17th through 19th centuries survive in Colonial, Georgian, and Federal styles. After decline and the filling of the old inlet around 1900, the district faced demolition in the late 1950s until preservationists saved it. Since opening as a museum in 1965, it has preserved an entire historic community rather than a single landmark.
