The Delaware and Lehigh National and State Heritage Corridor spans more than 150 miles across five Pennsylvania counties, linking people, places, and events that helped shape the nation through the legacy of canals and railroads from Northeastern Pennsylvania’s coal age. Its history includes the lives and labor of lumberjacks, coal miners, lock tenders, canalers, and railroaders, as well as diverse immigrant communities who endured hardship in search of prosperity and opportunity for their children. In its northern reaches, Luzerne County’s coal towns and cities reflect ethnic diversity, while Carbon County offers scenery and reminders of coal and lumber industries. The Lehigh Valley combines rolling hills, rivers, farms, covered bridges, Victorian townhouses, Moravian heritage, and the history of the steel and cement industries, and Bucks County along the Delaware River Scenic Drive brings together pastoral landscapes, sites from the struggle for independence, an artist’s community, and Colonial farmsteads. Throughout the corridor, trails, waterways, historic landmarks, museums, and industrial remains preserve a distinctive American landscape shaped by anthracite coal, transportation networks, industry, and efforts to protect exceptional vistas while encouraging appropriate development.
