The site was bought by B.B. Boone, G.W. Williams, and W.P. Curlee from Chickasaw Le-Ho-Yea. It was named for pioneer R.H. Boone, a descendant of Daniel Boone. It was chartered in 1873 and made county seat of the newly formed Prentiss County.
