Mount Wire is a 7,146-foot peak on the east side of Salt Lake City above the University of Utah, known for broad views across the valley and as a popular, moderately difficult hike. Also called Wire Mountain or Big Beacon, it was named for Lester Wire, the Salt Lake City policeman who developed the first red-green electric traffic light in 1912. Its summit and slopes preserve traces of older communications and aviation infrastructure, including an out-of-service airway beacon and remnants of electrical equipment. Two large microwave repeaters once helped relay communications toward northeastern Utah before their removal in 2013.
