Anaconda–Pintler Wilderness is a protected mountain region in southwestern Montana stretching about 40 miles along the Anaconda Range and covering nearly 250 square miles between the Sapphire Mountains and Big Hole Valley. Its elevations rise from about 5,000 feet to 10,793 feet at West Goat Peak, with several accessible peaks above 10,000 feet and a strong trail system that has made it a well-known backcountry destination. First set aside as a Primitive Area in 1937 and redesignated wilderness in 1964, it is managed by the Beaverhead-Deerlodge and Bitterroot National Forests and takes its name from local mining and homesteading history.
