Nature
Mount Tom is a peak in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, in the Willey Range near Crawford Notch. Its name preserves the memory of Thomas “Tom” Crawford, one of the Crawford family members whose inns made the notch an early center of travel and mountain tourism. From 1829 to about 1850, Tom Crawford ran the Notch House at the top of the pass, and a larger hotel he began later became the Crawford House after financial troubles forced him to sell and leave. The mountain’s streams flow into the Ammonoosuc River system, and a proposed early 1970s ski area on its northern slope was never built.
