Also called Fort Milroy, Cheat Summit Camp was a fortified camp in a gap at the crest of White Top of Cheat Mountain. Federal troops occupied it during the fall and winter of 1861-1862 and repulsed threats in Lee's mountain campaign of 1861. The fort's command of the Parkersburg-Staunton Turnpike prevented Lee's army from advancing inland. At above 4,000 feet elevation, it was the highest Union fort in the Civil War.
