The Anne McClements Woods tract of the Fork Branch Nature Preserve is the largest forest stand within Dover city limits, encompassing 259.32 acres, including more than 200 acres of mature forest with many trees older than 140 years and about 98 acres of forested wetlands, or 43% of the preserve. Half of the property was owned by Dr. James McClements and his late wife Anne, for whom the area is named, while the other half was held in trust for their children and grandchildren. Although the land was scheduled for development, in 2003 Dr. McClements agreed to donate it to the state of Delaware in Anne's memory, with funding from the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control's Open Space Program. McClements, who was responsible for much of the development of land along Kenton Road and delivered 7,500 infants during a 35-year obstetrical career in Dover, helped save environmentally important forest and wetlands, including groves of beech trees and other native species, for present and future generations.
