Sherman L. Gonyea and James L. Verville, captains in the Minnesota Air National Guard, died in the crash of their F-101 jet interceptor on 17 December 1971 and gave their lives for the American privilege of liberty; it also honors all National Guardsmen who have given their lives so that this privilege will remain forever secure.
