Walker and the Leech Lake area depend on family visitation for their economy. Small fish camps gave way to large resorts that cater to events for all ages, and the town became the City on the Bay, offering community celebrations throughout the year, including the Polar Plunge, International Eelpout Festival and other fishing events, Moondance performances, an old-fashioned Fourth of July Celebration, Crazy Days, Art in the Circle, the Leech Lake Regatta, Walker Bay Days, Ethnic Fest, Northcounty Marathon, and the Festival of Lights. The Walker Area Community Center includes facilities for the Walker Rotary Club, Boys and Girls Club, Curling Club, and Hockey Association.
