Pat Cousins and Paul Cousins were longtime Dexter residents whose contributions to the area spanned nearly 60 years. Pat served the Village as treasurer, election inspector, and fill-in staff. She was a longtime member of the Dexter District Library Board, where she was a vital member of the Finance and Facilities committees and played an instrumental role in bringing the vision of a new library on Alpine Street to life. She also participated in the Dexter Garden Club, Women's Business Association, Dexter Historical Society, the Encore Musical Theatre Company, and the Dexter Senior Center. Paul served as Village Trustee from 1992 to 1998 and 2004 to 2014, and as City Council Member from 2017 to 2022. He also participated in or led several Council committees, including the Arts, Culture, and Heritage Committee, Street, Sidewalk, Alley Committee, and Board of Review, and initiated action to create the Arts, Culture, and Heritage Committee and First Street Park. He represented the Village and City in numerous community groups, including 5 Health Towns, Huron River Watershed Council, WAVE, the Dexter Chamber of Commerce, and the Big 400. He was also a well-loved high school environmental science and biology teacher, helped found the Dexter Rotary, worked as part of the Village of Dexter team that advocated for the removal of the Mill Pond Dam and the development of Mill Creek Park, and with Pat owned and operated the Cousins Heritage Inn, a well-known farm-to-table restaurant in the Village of Dexter, from 1984 to 2001. Together they also helped organize the foundation that eventually purchased Gordon Hall, preserving the historic site for future generations to enjoy. In 2024, a trail segment was renamed in their memory; it begins at the outdoor science lab Paul created during his teaching years, follows Mill Creek, passes Mill Creek Park South and North, and ends near the library.
