Pinckney State Recreation Area in southeastern Michigan spans 11,000 acres of connected parcels shaped by glaciation, with moraines, kettle lakes, wetlands, and more than 20 lakes draining to the Grand and Huron watersheds. Linked to Waterloo State Recreation Area by the Waterloo–Pinckney Trail, it supports year-round recreation including hiking, camping, swimming, boating, fishing, hunting, and winter sports. Its landscape reflects both oak forests and former farmland. The area around Hell grew from a 19th-century mill settlement into a summer resort, while parkland expanded in the 1940s and 1950s. Today it remains an important, accessible outdoor landscape near population centers.
