Clear Creek Confederate War Camps
Military
4
In this part of Waller County, several Civil War encampments were established despite the absence of surviving physical evidence. Historical accounts identify the area as a logical site for training soldiers and holding Federal prisoners because of its proximity to Clear Creek, the railroad, and the city of Hempstead. Camp Groce and Camp Herbert were the best known, and other camps were created as needed and abandoned when they were no longer necessary.
