Green River National Wildlife Refuge is a federal refuge in Kentucky at the meeting of the Green and Ohio rivers, across from Evansville, Indiana. It joined the National Wildlife Refuge System in 2019 as its 568th unit, beginning with 10 donated acres from the Southern Conservation Corp. That small start served a much larger purpose: the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service intends to build a refuge of 24,000 acres within a 52,000-acre Conservation Partnership Area. The refuge marks the opening phase of a long-term effort to protect wildlife habitat in this important river confluence landscape.
