Avery Rock Light stands on a small rocky islet in the middle of Machias Bay on the Maine coast, reachable only by boat. The first lighthouse, built in 1875, was an unusual combined dwelling and light: a square tower with gallery and lantern centered on the keeper’s house, all set on the exposed rock. Automation in 1926 ended the need for a resident keeper. After severe storm damage in 1947 made the original structure beyond repair, it was demolished and replaced by a simpler 13-foot skeletal tower with a 17-foot focal plane, flashing white every six seconds to guide navigation in the bay.
