Built between 1888 and 1889, the Gardner Earl Memorial Chapel and Crematorium was created as a memorial to cremation advocate Gardner Earl and became the most architecturally and technologically sophisticated of the nation's early public crematoria. Its elegant ceremonial chapel affirmed cremation as an alternative to traditional burials.
