The Hanging Rock Mineral Spring contained sulphur, magnesium, and iron, properties common to chalybeate springs. Once known for its healing water, the spring became the site of a resort and watering place in antebellum days, with an inn, cabins, bathhouses, a racetrack, a billiard hall, a ten pin alley, and a store, and it operated circa 1850-1865.
