Lou Tate Bousman (1906-79), born in Bowling Green, Ky., worked during the Arts & Crafts movement to preserve historic coverlet patterns in Appalachia at President Hoover’s request. Her work with Mrs. Hoover led to the development of her Little Loom, and Eleanor Roosevelt ordered linens for the White House from Tate. From 1937 to 1979, she educated hundreds of people in hand weaving at the Little Loomhouse. Mildred Jane Hill and Patty Smith Hill, noted kindergarten and music teachers, had a summer residence on Kenwood Hill called Hill House. In 1893, the sisters published the song “Good Morning to All,” and during a birthday party held in the Little Loomhouse, Patty suggested changing the words to “Happy Birthday to You,” which became one of the three most popular songs in English.
