Created by Congress in 1965, Whiskeytown–Shasta–Trinity National Recreation Area spans 246,087 acres in northern California and is divided into the Shasta, Trinity, and Whiskeytown units, each centered on a major reservoir. Managed jointly by the United States Forest Service and the National Park Service, it combines large man-made lakes, prominent dams, and protected foothill and mountain terrain. Shasta Lake is the largest reservoir in California, while Trinity Lake and Lewiston Lake anchor the Trinity Unit, and Whiskeytown Lake is surrounded by extensive backcountry and trails. Across the area, varied plant communities and abundant wildlife make it one of the region’s broadest recreation landscapes.
