On July 12, 1863, General Morgan spent the evening in the Ferris Schoolhouse while his exhausted troopers camped at what is now St. Paul cemetery. Morgan and his Raiders had ridden approximately 45 miles that day and 150 miles in the previous four days. Two miles north at Sunman, 1,800 Union soldiers waited in railroad cars for orders to pursue them. At 5 a.m. on July 13, Morgan and his men continued their raid eastward along Asche Road, also known as County Road 900N, into Dearborn County.
