This salvage anchor was used on many ships and is still used today. On landing ship tank vessels, it served as a stern anchor: as the ship approached the beach, it dropped the stern anchor into the sea and trailed anchor chain until reaching the beach. After unloading, the ship used the weight of the anchor and chain to help winch itself free of the shore, a common practice or standard operating procedure for all LST's.
