Nanna Hubba Bluff, above the Tombigbee River near Calvert in northeastern Mobile County, Alabama, has a long history of human use from ancient Native American occupation to modern industry. People lived here at least by 1000 BC, and in the early 18th century the Nanibas, likely a Choctaw group whose name has been translated as “fish-eaters,” kept a village on the bluff before moving downstream toward Fort Louis de la Mobile and being absorbed into the Mobile tribe. Early European settlers later occupied the site, the Confederacy used it for shipyards during the Civil War, and in 2007 ThyssenKrupp built a major steel facility there.
