Clare Bailey Chapel

Originally built in 1881 in Averill, this church was donated to the Sanford Historical Society by Mrs. Gert Bailey in memory of her husband, Clare Bailey, then moved to its present location in 1979 and restored in 1982. Removing many layers of wallpaper revealed traces of the original colors and designs, leading to new stencils and restored decorative work. A window installed at the front of the church had earlier removed part of a covered Bible verse that once graced the wall, but after the wall was restored local ministers identified the proper verse from the remaining fragments and it was put back. The organ was donated several years ago and remains in working condition, the original heating system was a wood stove fired up early before services, and the bell can still be rung on special occasions. Weddings are still held in the chapel and can be arranged with the host/hostess.
