On March 2, 1781, General Lafayette, en route to Virginia to command an expedition against Benedict Arnold, landed 1500 troops here with cannon, stores, and ammunition. The Council of Maryland issued a warrant to impress carriages, teams, and drivers for his use at Christiana Bridge and vessels and hands at Head of Elk.
