In Greene County, Tennessee, the Civil War touched small towns, farms, houses, and mills as families were swept into a conflict that also became a "war within a war" in communities divided over secession and slavery. Tennessee had two hundred seventy-five thousand enslaved men and women who self-emancipated, and twenty thousand self-liberated warriors fought for freedom in the U.S. Colored Troops. Although the state seceded and supplied one hundred twenty thousand soldiers to Confederate armies, United States sentiment remained strong, especially in eastern Tennessee, and thirty-one thousand white Tennesseans fought for the Union, more than in any other Confederate state. More battles were fought in Tennessee than in any other state except Virginia.
