Samuel Hyer and his wife, the former Elizabeth Mitchell, lived on this site with their eight children, three sons and five daughters. Samuel was a leading iron worker at Maramec. Their daughter Martha became one of the earliest teachers at the Works and later married John Brazil Harrison, the son of James Berry Harrison and Lovisa Voss Duncan, who came to Phelps County in 1818. The cabin is a typical hewed log cabin and was the first of this type used by the iron workers built on Stringtown Road.
