The economic depression of the 1930's left millions of Americans lacking affordable housing. The Roosevelt Administration's New Deal included the idea of creating Greenbelt Communities to provide needed housing and employment. More than 100 cities across the county were considered, and in 1934 this site was one of only three chosen in the nation.
