The 1927 flood, considered by many to be the greatest natural disaster ever to befall the state, caused vast destruction, and Montpelier was particularly hard hit as flood waters rose over 8 feet in the Montpelier and Wells River yard. Rebuilding began immediately after the flood. Despite recent floods and two disastrous Main Street fires in 1875, Montpelier remains an increasingly rare townscape with a commercial, residential, and governmental mix that appears today much as it did one hundred years ago.
