Chickasaw Indian removal began in July 1837, allowing white settlers to establish residence in Colbert County. Among them were the Mhoon family, who migrated from Halifax County, North Carolina, in June 1837 and built their plantation on land purchased from Chief George Colbert. The family established a cemetery a half-mile from their plantation and began this family burial ground with the burial of their matriarch, Mary Mhoon, in October 1838. Following custom, they placed large marble markers there to remember Mhoon family members still buried in North Carolina. Over time, community members began burying their loved ones around the original Mhoon family graves.
