Smith College’s Botanic Garden in Northampton, Massachusetts, grew from campus landscape plans begun in the 1880s by Olmsted, Olmsted and Eliot and shaped by Frederick Law Olmsted’s 1893 design of curving drives, open lawns, specimen trees, and views across Paradise Pond. Elizabeth Jane Bullard oversaw the first major plantings, and in 1894 botanist William Francis Ganong and head gardener Edward J. Canning helped establish it as a living collection for study and display. Today it includes extensive outdoor gardens, a 127-acre arboretum, and the Lyman Conservatory, whose notable greenhouse collections give the garden both academic value and broad horticultural appeal.
