Originally installed in a cupola atop the Wallace Block in 1887, this bell served a brick building on the east side of South Ann Arbor Street that housed the city hall, opera house, and fire department. It was rung to alert the community in case of fire or other disaster and was also used to announce important events such as the signing of the Armistice after World War I. In 1931, the bell was moved to the park when it was replaced by a siren.
