Elliott White Springs, a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Service with the 148th Aero Squadron, 4th Pursuit Group, AEF, received the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action near Bapaume, France, on 22 August 1918. Attacking three enemy Fokker planes that were driving on an American plane, he fought a short and skillful engagement, drove off two of the enemy, and shot down the third. On the same day, he attacked a formation of five enemy Fokker planes and, after shooting down one plane, was forced to retire because of lack of ammunition. A flying ace with 16 victories, Springs was later promoted to captain.
