Founded in 1966 by Lithuanian-American businessman Stanley Balzekas Jr., the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture in Chicago’s West Lawn neighborhood preserves and promotes Lithuanian culture in the United States. It is the nation’s largest museum devoted to Lithuania and the Lithuanian-American experience, covering language, history, culture, and politics. Through events, workshops, and educational programs such as Užgavėnės mask making, Easter egg decorating, and straw Christmas ornament making, it extends its work beyond exhibitions. It also collaborates with many organizations and publishes the quarterly Lithuanian Museum Review, serving a city with the world’s largest Lithuanian community outside Lithuania.
