Just to the north, from 1874 to 1900, ran the Mackenzie Trail. More than a million buffalo hides were hauled east along it, and settlers traveled west by this main trail between T.P.-F.W. and D’rrys. Tonkawa Indians guided Mackenzie in the defeat of the Comanches in Tule Canyon, ending Indian power in Texas. The trail died with the coming of the railroad by 1900, and along it Longhorn ranches began.
