Eagle Rock is a dome-shaped sandstone outcrop in Los Angeles County whose eagle-like indentation gave its name to the surrounding neighborhood and made it a familiar local emblem. Formed millions of years ago by hot springs, it was long a point of human use as well as a geologic landmark. Tongva people inhabited caves at its base and used it as a lookout in the 1700s, and local tradition says Tiburcio Vasquez hid there in 1874. Known to Spanish settlers as La Piedra Gorda and called Eagle Rock by at least 1888, it later hosted annual Easter services and was designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 10 in 1962.
