Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park preserves most of New Jersey’s historic Delaware and Raritan Canal corridor as a long linear greenway established in 1974. Centered on the old canal and its towpath, once used by mules hauling barges, the park now supports hiking, jogging, bicycling, horseback riding, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. About 36 miles of the main canal and all 22 miles of the feeder canal survive, with access at many road crossings. Its trails also connect by five bridges across the Delaware River to Pennsylvania’s Delaware Canal State Park, extending the route’s regional significance as both recreation space and a reminder of the canal era.
