Built at Camp Hulen in Palacios, Texas at the beginning of the nineteen-forties as the main chapel in a wartime expansion that turned a tent camp into an anti-aircraft artillery training base, this ecumenical church served all creeds and religions. After World War II ended and Fort Bliss became the anti-aircraft artillery center, Camp Hulen was closed as a training base and the church was declared surplus and offered for sale. Meanwhile, Ansgar Evangelical Lutheran Church, consecrated beside this site in 1909, was destroyed by a hurricane on August 17, 1945. The chapel was then purchased for the Danevang community, moved twenty-five miles north in sections, reassembled here, and dedicated on December 14, 1947. Its bell from the original church, along with salvaged artifacts including a painting of Saint Angar baptizing a child and the altar table, remains in use, and the church has continued to help hold the Danevang community together since 1894.
